July 28, 2023

Discover why peels are all the rave in beauty, learn the difference between AHAs and BHAs and find out what to expect during the treatment and what to do for post-peel aftercare.

If you're on a quest for glowing and rejuvenated skin, facial peels may hold the key to unlocking your desired results. These transformative treatments have become increasingly popular in the world of skincare for their ability to address various skin concerns effectively. Among the many types of facial peels, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) peels stand out as two prominent options, each with its unique set of benefits. In this article, we'll delve into the world of facial peel treatments, exploring the differences between AHA and BHA peels and how they can transform your skin by targeting signs of aging, acne scarring, pigmentation, textured skin, dryness, and acne.

AHA vs. BHA Peels: What's the difference?

AHA and BHA peels are both chemical peels, but they differ in their molecular structures and the way they interact with the skin.

AHA peels, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid peels, are water-soluble and work on the skin's surface. They are effective in exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, improving skin texture and promoting a radiant complexion.

On the other hand, BHA peels, primarily salicylic acid peels, are oil-soluble and can penetrate deeper into the pores. This makes them particularly useful for targeting acne and congested skin.

What are the benefits of AHA Peels?

  • Diminishing Signs of Aging: AHA peels stimulate collagen production, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By promoting skin cell turnover, these peels also improve skin elasticity and firmness.
  • Fading Pigmentation: AHA peels, such as lactic acid peels, are effective in reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. They work by gently exfoliating the top layers of the skin, revealing a more even skin tone.
  • Smoothing Textured Skin: For those dealing with rough and uneven skin texture, AHA peels can be a game-changer. These peels slough off dead skin cells, resulting in smoother and softer skin.
  • Enhancing Radiance: By removing dead skin cells and stimulating skin cell turnover, AHA peels reveal a fresh and glowing complexion, making them ideal for achieving that sought-after radiant glow.

What are the benefits of BHA Peels?

  • Treating Acne and Congestion: BHA peels, specifically salicylic acid peels, are highly effective in treating acne-prone skin. They penetrate deep into the pores to unclog them and reduce sebum production, effectively combating acne.
  • Addressing Acne Scarring: BHA peels can help improve the appearance of acne scars by promoting collagen production and skin regeneration. Over time, this leads to smoother and less noticeable scars.
  • Regulating Oil Production: BHA peels are suitable for oily and combination skin types as they help regulate oil production, reducing excess oil and shine.
  • Reducing Inflammation: BHA peels have anti-inflammatory properties, making them beneficial for calming irritated and inflamed skin, such as that seen in acne-prone skin.

How to prep for a peel?

It is recommended that you avoid UV exposure, antibiotics, and anything that could damage or weaken your skin barrier two weeks prior to receiving your peel. It's also recommended that you stop using any products containing retinol, BHAs/AHAs, and benzoyl peroxide a week before receiving the peel. Ensuring strong barrier integrity and hydration in the skin is important impact the effectiveness of your peel and your level of comfort during the process. If your skin is flaking or dry, this usually is a sign that your skin barrier is compromised and that your skin needs hydration.

We recommend all our patients to take essentially fatty acid (EFA) supplements such as EFA Ultra by DMK prior to their treatment to ensure their skin barrier is healthy and functioning optimally.

During your peel

On the day of the chemical peel facial, your esthetician will start by cleansing your skin to remove any makeup, oil, or impurities. This step ensures that the peel solution can penetrate the skin effectively for optimal results.

Once your skin is clean and prepped, the chemical peel solution will be carefully applied to the targeted areas. The peel solution may contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or a combination of both, depending on your specific skin concerns and the esthetician's recommendation.

As the chemical peel solution is applied, you may experience a mild tingling or stinging sensation, particularly around the nose area. This is normal and expected, especially with stronger peels. However, the discomfort is usually temporary and subsides quickly.

Throughout the chemical peel facial, your therapist will closely monitor your skin's reaction to the peel solution. The timing of the peel will be carefully managed to achieve the desired results while ensuring your safety and comfort.

After the chemical peel solution has been on your skin for the appropriate amount of time, your therapist will neutralize or remove the peel. They may then apply a soothing and cooling mask or product to alleviate any discomfort and reduce redness. At Hawthorne Skin & Beauty we're also a fan of using the healing properties of LED Light Therapy to soothe the skin, boost collagen production and reduce downtime.

Aftercare

After your peel, it's crucial that you apply sun protection everyday. Ideally products with zinc & titanium in order to provide the best protection against UV damage whilst being non-comodogenic during your skin's recovery. We often recommend the Mineral Tinted SPF50+ by Dermatonics as a fantastic option.

It's also important to avoid further exfoliation and refrain from using retinols and other AHA/BHA products for at least a week after your peel.

And finally, enjoy your skin is well hydrated and moisturized. Drinking plenty of water is not only good for your skin, it's good for your body and mind.

Your peel questions, answered:

Are facial peels painful?

Facial peels may cause some mild discomfort or tingling during the application, but this sensation is generally well-tolerated and short-lived. The intensity of the sensation depends on the type and strength of the peel, but your skincare professional can adjust the treatment to ensure your comfort. Having well hydrated skin and a strong skin barrier are important factors which will determine how intense this sensation will be.

How long does it take to see results after a facial peel?

The timeline for visible results varies depending on the type of peel and the specific skin concern being addressed. Some individuals may notice immediate improvements in skin texture and radiance, while more significant changes may take several weeks to become noticeable. Multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Are facial peels safe for all skin types?

Facial peels can be tailored to suit different skin types and concerns. However, individuals with extremely sensitive or highly reactive skin may need to opt for gentler peels or avoid them altogether. Book a skin chat with one of our skincare professionals to determine the most suitable peel for your skin.

How often should I get facial peels?

The frequency of facial peels depends on the type of peel, its strength, and your skin's response to the treatment. Light peels can be done more frequently, while deeper peels may require longer intervals between treatments. Your skincare professional will recommend a personalized treatment plan based on your skin's needs and desired results.

The choice between AHA and BHA peels allows for targeted results, from combating signs of aging and pigmentation to addressing acne and acne scarring.
